The ‘Fast Moving Consumer Goods’ sector is one of the biggest industries in the world and produces a wide range of goods such as soft drinks, processed foods, toiletries, cleaning products and more.  It is an industry that has proved to be very resilient to recession, with the vast majority of companies in the sector weathering the financial storm in a way that very few others have been able to.

The Sales & Marketing team in BrightStar (part of the Brightwater Group) have seen a marked increase in the number of FMCG Sales & Account Management roles available across the island of Ireland in 2015.  This is due to increased consumer confidence which is driving sales and intensifying competition for market share.

During the recession there were recruitment freezes implemented in many of the larger companies which stalled the employment market.  Their primary focus was to maintain business at an acceptable level and hold on to their market share.  Smaller companies during this time simply couldn’t afford to hold on to their sales staff which unfortunately resulted in many redundancies.

In the past year, however, companies of all sizes have begun re-investing in sales teams to push and promote their brands; and the need for skilled & experienced staff to fill these roles is on the increase.  As such, we’re currently experiencing high demand for professionals for roles such as Sales Managers, Sales Representatives, Key Account Managers & Sales Analysts.  Remuneration has also been improved in the sector to attract the best candidates, with competitive commission structures, company cars, laptops and phones being seen as key parts of the remuneration package.

Re-building Sales departments from this low starting point has also afforded companies a chance to implement changes in their strategy.  We have seen the splitting out of Sales and Account Management teams to give more defined focus to either gaining new business or maximising revenue with current clients.

Market Developers and Brand Developers are being brought in, particularly with strong international brands, to maximise companies’ exposure in the marketplace.  We expect to see more of these jobs being created as the local FMCG sector continues to expand into new export markets across the globe.
