A Career in Business Support

Posted by & filed under Career Development.

Whether you’re just starting out as a professional or looking for a career change, maybe you’ve been considering a career in business support.

However, if you’re not sure what the entry criteria is, whether you have the necessary qualifications or skills or you want to know what the career prospects are, or what benefits business support roles have over other career choices, we’ve outlined some starting points below for you to consider.

Qualifications Needed

Depending on the level of the role, what employers are looking for vary between organisations. Sometimes a company may look for a third level degree or secretarial qualification, a Pitman diploma or in some cases of very junior roles, employers don’t specify any qualification in particular other than the Leaving Cert. So if you currently don’t have any qualifications, don’t let that hold you back from pursuing a career in business support. However, an ability to touch type at speed is always an advantage as is a thorough knowledge of the Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Softer Skills

For roles at a more junior level, employers are looking for a willingness to learn, to go the extra mile, a great work ethic and culture fit. Other skills that are an advantage in a business support role include:

  • Organisational skills
  • Flexibility
  • Multitasking
  • Diary management

So what can a career in business support give you that few other roles can’t?

Every company, regardless of its size or sector needs effective administration staff so the main advantage of a business support role is that you can work in any industry. You can also move between industries with ease which will give you diversity, broaden your horizons and offer opportunities that other roles simply cannot give you. You will also gain exposure to different office systems that can only benefit you in the long run.

In terms of career progression, entry roles within business support can act as a springboard for progression within the organisation. Below are just a few of the options available for career progression within a business support role.

  • Receptionist/Administration → PA/Office Manager
  • Project Admin → Project Management
  • Customer Service → Team Lead → Customer Services Manager
  • Sales Support → Sales Representative → Sales Manager
  • Legal Secretary → Legal Executive
